Seed Formation and Phenotypic Expression of Intra - and Inter - specific Hybrids of Brassica and of Intergeneric Hybrids Obtained by Crossing with Raphanus

Abstract
Seed set in interspecific hybrids was normal except when Brassica juncea was used as a female parent, whereas intergeneric hybrids were not able to produce seeds. Depending on the cross combinations, parthenocarpic fruits were obtained by pseudo-fertilization, especially when B. juncea was used as either female or male parent. Intermediate phenotypes were observed in most crosses, but in B. campestris ¢¥Hirazuka¢¥¡¿B. juncea, B. campestris ¢¥Cheongbang¢¥¡¿B. juncea, B. campestris ¢¥Haruna¢¥¡¿R. sativus ¢¥Namwonmu¢¥ and R. sativus ¢¥Daibyosobudori¢¥ , paternal inheritance was observed while in B. juncea¡¿B. campestris to R. sativus ¢¥Namwonmu¢¥ (1-10), and R. sativus ¢¥Kungjung¢¥¡¿B. juncea, maternal inheritance was obvious. Flower color of interspecific hybrids in Brassica was yellow and white in interspecific hybrids with radish. However, B. campestris ¢¥Haruna¢¥¡¿R. sativus ¢¥Kungjung¢¥ and B. juncea¡¿R. sativus ¢¥Daibyosobudori¢¥ ¢¥Kungjung¢¥ , ¢¥Jungkukcheongpi¢¥ , ¢¥Yonghyoon¢¥ , and ¢¥Namwonmu¢¥ (6-10) crosses produced yellow flowers, and hybrids of R. sativus ¢¥Kungjung¢¥¡¿B. juncea produced whitish yellow flowers. Interspecific hybrids between Brassica and Raphanus yielded very few seeds due to cross incompatibility. Seeds obtained did not germinate or, showed maternal inheritance, if germinated, indicating that the seeds thus were produced by pseudo-fertilization. Colchicine treatment on intergeneric hybrids resulted in 1.03 to 1.42 times larger flowers. Hypogynous phenomena was also observed, and artificial selfing or cross-pollination produced no seeds.
